Women in the Automotive Industry

Automotive is one of the sectors where developments in technology are reflected in the fastest way. Although automotive is seen as a male-dominated sector like many other business lines and men are still in the majority in terms of the number of employees, female employees in key roles are making their mark.
To look at the presence of women in the automotive sector in numbers, the information in the relevant report of Catalyst Knowledge Centre is as follows:

- Women account for 26.7 per cent of positions in the automotive manufacturing and vehicle equipment manufacturing sectors.
- The participation rate of women in managerial level positions in vehicle manufacturing is 16.9 per cent.
- Only 1 out of every 5 dealership employees is a woman.
- Only 7.3% of those employed in automotive repair and maintenance positions are women.

According to a Forbes article, more women than men buy and drive cars every day. "Women influence 85% of car buying decisions and make 62% of car buyers, and there are 1.4 million more women than men with a driving license in the US"

Although male employees are predominant in the automotive sector, women have also started to work in many areas of automotive brands all over the world and take managerial positions. The fact that women have easier access to education opportunities and can participate in programs where they can improve themselves professionally has a great impact on this.

Although the role of women in the automotive industry, their contributions, and their impact on the changing dynamics in the industry are enormous, we experience that they can be categorized as follows:

Diversity and Creativity:
The presence of women in the automotive sector increases diversity in the sector and brings different perspectives.

Leadership and Management:
In recent years, we have observed an increase in the number of women leaders in the automotive sector. Women managers increase the sustainability and competitive advantage of companies by displaying a different approach to decision-making processes. This enriches the understanding of leadership in the sector and inspires the next generation of leaders.

Design and Engineering:
The increasing number of women engineers and designers in the automotive sector brings diversity to the aesthetic and technical characteristics of vehicles.

Marketing and Communication:
The impact of women in the automotive sector is not limited to design and engineering. In the field of marketing and communication, women help brands in the sector reach their target audience more effectively, considering their weight as vehicle users. Advertising campaigns coming from the perspective of women increase the social sensitivity of brands in the sector.

Education and Inspiration:
Women's presence in the automotive sector inspires other young women to pursue a career in this field. Training programs and mentoring activities support women's participation in the sector and contribute to the development of future leaders.
